It’s that time of year when artist open their doors to the public so that the public can see where the artistic process happens.  Open studios is a great time of year to visit your artist pals and to meet new artists.  Sure, it’s great to visit with old friends, but this should be an adventure.  Afterall, would you go to Rome every year when you have never been to Venice?

To make this experience fun for all I have a few guidelines.

1. Go to the opening.  Not only is it a great way to see the actual work of an artist but also to sample some of the local food and wine.

2. Research the artist.  All artists have websites.  Visit their site to get an overview of the artist and their process.  You’ll get a good understanding of what motivates them to do the work.

3. For optimal time with the artists, plan on visiting during the morning hours.  Many people don’t show up until the afternoon.

4. If you like to spend more time, take a business card, and make an appointment.  Most artist would be glad to show you more their work after the show.

5. Be careful touching artwork.  Ask beforehand.  You never know what is being worked on and therefore is still wet or delicate.

6. Respect the artist’s price point.  Whereas most artist will gladly give you a discount, telling an artist their work is “not worth that much” is a no-no.

7. Don’t ask for a tour of their home or garden.  They are their trying to sell work.  Showing you the garden takes the artist away from showing their art to potential buyers.

8. Wear your mask. This goes without saying.

Lastly, if you’re in the Sonoma County area drop on by Ken’s Open Studio; September 18, 19 and September 25, 26.
